Taamaki ki Raro Faamasino (Sino) Mann

Sino loves what he gets to do in the very busy Ward 9 at Middlemore Hospital.

He’s risen pretty quickly through the ranks here – he started as a new graduate nurse around eight years ago and rose in fairly short order to fill the role of Charge Nurse Manager.

“I grew up in this community – I am passionate about my Samoan heritage and roots, and I bring what I love doing amongst my community into my role here at Counties.

“This is a full-on environment: as a general surgical ward, we get to do it all – helping patients on their journey from pre to post-operative, and we love sending them away hopefully healing well.”

Sino says he relishes the positive changes he sees happening in his ward.

“We’ve been working hard with the recruitment process and this year, so far we have been very pleased to see it paying off - they’re arriving here in good numbers and it makes the work here much more effective.”

Sino says a ward like his is full of interesting challenges: he says he particularly likes seeing an efficient flow of patients through from the Emergency Department and is happy when the doctors and nurses have a smooth day on the ward rounds.

Sino says medicine is in his blood – his Mum is a retired midwife and there are also doctors on the other side of his family.

“Most of all, I love the culture of this place – it gets me up in the morning and I enjoy coming back for more!”
