Our General Fellowships

Our three general fellowship positions are highly sought after as they permit fellows to individualise their year-long tenure and create learning goals for thier own personal development.  Middlemore is rich with learning opportunity, and the case load and patient complexity enables excellent  exposure all surgical subspecialty areas. Former fellows have enjoyed the flexibilty the general post allows, with  past fellowships  including an emphasis on: transthoracic echo, paediatrics, major head and neck cases, major orthopaedics (spine / pelvic trauma / mangled limb), daystay and maxillofacial anaesthesia.

Our fellows can expect:

  • A wide range of subspeciality exposure.
  • Varied, regular lists, paired with a consultant approximately 30% of the time.
  • Scope to be rostered with emphasis on personal subspecialty interest.
  • Mentoring and oversight by dedicated "generalist" staff specialists.
  • Numerous research opportunities.
  • A supportive environment in which to develop and consolidate independent practice.
  • A well-rounded year facilitating maturation, and polishing of non-clinical skills required in the transition to a junior generalist consultant.

Key Learning Objectives:

  1. Proficiency in providing anaesthesia within a busy, multicultural tertiary hospital.
  2. Proficiency in the majority of basic regional techniques.
  3. Competency in providing  anaesthesia in our comorbid,  complex, and morbidly obese population.
  4. Refinement of clinical and non-clinical skills required to function at junior consultant level.
  5. Ample opportunity to be taught and to teach others (nurses / technicians / junior anaesthetic trainees).

"My experience during my general fellowship here at Middlemore has been truly fantastic so far, exceeding all expectations!  I feel I have managed to increase my confidence and competence in such a wide variety of skills across multiple anaesthetic specialties.  The department has an atmosphere of great team spirit, and is packed full of motivated, highly skilled anaesthetists who are enthusiastic about their jobs and equally enthusiastic about sharing their skills with the fellows and trainees.  As a result it has been a perfect way to hone my skills in preparation for a consultant job.

Despite being a "general" fellowship, it is very flexible, and I have not felt limited in the slightest to the clinical opportunities on offer.  For example, I have managed to do more regional blocks during the last 12 months, than in my entire training to date despite not being on the "regional" fellowship.  I have also had plenty of experience with burns and paediatrics as well as developing the necessary management and non-clinical skills useful for any consultant job.  If you are looking for a fellowship to improve your overall clinical skills in a busy, diverse and friendly department with a challenging case mix, then I don't think you could do any better than Middlemore".
