Ward one Charge Nurse Manager Lucy Scott is continuing the legacy of her late grandad Sir John Scott who walked the same halls at Middlemore Hospital, where she now works.
Sir John Scott was a medical scientist who received a knighthood for services to medicine.
"He always talked about Middlemore - Grandad saw the inequities faced by South Auckland, and he wanted to help grow the future of medicine here.
“Middlemore always had a special place in his heart, a place he wanted to make a difference.
"When I was studying to become a nurse, he always said to make sure you get it at Middlemore because he believed we provide world-class healthcare here.”
It's a full-circle moment for Lucy working in renal care in the Scott Building which is named after her grandad, and colleague David Scott.
"I attended the ceremony when they named the building for him so it sometimes feels surreal to be working in the same building helping support the nurses and patients here.
"I've been a nurse for over six years, and this is the only hospital I've worked at and probably will be the only one. It's your home away from home, and the team here feels like family.
Lucy is proud of her family’s legacy and to have the opportunity to lead by her grandads example.
"Grandad taught me to respect everyone and he didn't follow a hierarchy model.
“Being a charge nurse in leadership, I carry that with me, that everyone's job is essential to making this hospital run.
Lucy says her grandad was very talented and incredibly special to her.
"He accomplished so much, but for me, I'll always see my grandad as someone who gave me chocolate ice cream when my mum said no."
